The 97 year old Duke of Edinburgh has just been involved in a car accident pulling out of a private road onto the A149 near Her Majesty’s Sandringham Estate.

He climbed (assisted) free of his vehicle which came to rest on the driver’s side of the Land Rover, Freelander.

Kinja'd!!!

The two occupants of the other vehicle as with the Duke of Edinburgh were both not seriously injured (the driver suffered some cuts and her passenger an arm injury) and both drivers breathalysed as routine and both passed.

I wish all the best for all involved.

Yep, definitely a Freelander, his 2013 Land Rover Freelander to be precise.

Is he still allowed to drive himself?

“Freelander”

Well, that was his first mistake.

There is some ambiguity as to whether it was a Freelander or a Range Rover.

His Highness has had several Freelanders over the years.

The Duke was driving.

Police confirmed that both the Duke and a female driver had been breathalysed at the scene and had not been drinking.

Drivers are routinely b reathalysed at scenes of road traffic collisions.

Drivers over the age of 70 are to reapply for their licence every three years.

Everyone is legally bound to notify the DVLC of any changes to their licence such as name change, change of address, changes in health, etc...

This is for everyone and no special dispensations are given for individuals.

Ye’, it’s been that way for some time, only now they put it up under the comment box when people type.

It was good years ago when you could continuously edit or remove a comment (occasionally made some look like they were arguing to themselves when people edited their own comment though, lol).

A local had said it looked lucky for a 30 year old to be unhurt, never mind a 97 year old.

I think removing comments (or at least being able to dismiss your own) should be allowed in limited circumstances.

That’s what I read. I didn’t see where the article put fault, not that you would do that at this stage anyway. Someone did say the light was causing visibility problems

The person the commenter is replying to can dismiss the comment still but ye’, being able to remove a comment that was placed in error or worded in a way that could offend or cause confusion is needed.

Why even bother breathalyzing him? What would they do, arrest him in the name of his wife?

The only thing ruled out so far really is alcohol (both drivers passed the breathalyser).

The article hasn’t put any one at fault, merely ruled out alcohol.

I wonder if “everyone” includes Liz. She’s immune to some laws, e.g. she only pays tax voluntarily. A nd in her persona as the Crown, technically all roads are just part of her driveway...

Drivers as road traffic accidents are routinely breathalysed and if the Duke was found to be intoxicated, yes he would be arrested. To even suggest otherwise is lu nacy.

Is there a precedent for a prince/princess consort being arrested?

Legal and actually will happen would likely diverge in such a case.

Her Majesty would also be breathalysed had Her majesty of been driving and not immune to the vast majority of laws in the U.K.. If Her Majesty were to be found at fault either under alcohol intoxication or otherwise she would be charged.

Breathalysed yes . Was more being idly curious about whether she techn ically needs a drivers license, just like she doesn’t need a passport.

Actually, I just looked it up: she doesn’t, according to Wikipedia . She doesn’t need a number plate on her car, either.

The royal family aren’t above the law, the only difference is that Her Majesty can’t be tried in court as they are her courts, Her Majesty would have to be de-throned first and then tried in court .

Princess Anne has been c aught speeding on at least four occasions, one was a verbal (when she was 19) warning which any police officer can give at their own discretion if the speed wasn’t too excessive and road conditions were good, in 1990 Princess Anne was fined and banned for one month for admitting two speeding offences, her most recent as far as I’m aware was 2001 where she was fined.

The driving licence and passports are issued in her name so no she doesn’t need them. Her Majesty can’t be tried in court like everyone else can, they would have to de-throne her first, then be tried in court.

It would have to be serious to de-throne a monarch though.

I would understand tha t if she was found to be drink driving or speeding she would give up driving or the Met police insist they drive.

He was assisted (and shouting about his legs apparently) but still, at 97 and after being T-boned, rolled on it’s side, spun and then rolled onto it’s other side in a (confirmed) Land Rover, Freelander.

My bad, I forgot that the Freelander existed in other markets that recently (since it was the LR2 in the states). Surprising that royalty would be driving something so old but not yet classic.

A classic has to get old to be a classic.

The state cars are just that, state cars. The royal family have cars just like anyone else.

The Duke has an old Metrocab taxi he uses to quietly get around London, Her Majesty has/had a quite old Land Rover Defender 110.
